2a6 Annotated bibliography on change

Development Plan Portfolio Documentation

Read selections from the following books and magazines:

  • ABCD’s of Managing Change –  Introduction to Performance Technology, Diane Dormant, 1986, suggested by Randy Siebold.
  • Fast Company subscription.
  • Managing Information Technology in Turbulent Times, Louis Fried, 1994.
Prepare an annotated bibliography on the topic of change.  Know who are the experts in the field, and the topics at the cutting edge of knowledge.  Reflect on each of the stages in John Kotter’s change process.

1. Who Moved My Cheese?

This little book by Spencer Johnson (1998) has the sub-title "An A-Mazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life."  It is a simple parable about change, with characters who live in a maze and have their needs met from a source of cheese.  But "unexpectedly", one day the cheese is no longer there.  The moral of the story is to accept the fact that change happens, to be looking out for it, to be ready for it when it comes, and to adapt to it.

2. Fast Company subscription

I received a 1-year subscription to this magazine, and from my reading, I formed the very clear impression that spectacular success rarely comes from sticking to methods that are "tried and true".  The approach seems to be to shake up whatever is there, or to try something that is totally bold and new, even unthinkable.

This approach is consistent with the message that Tom Peters' preaches.  He proposes that CEO's should change their title from Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to Chief Destructive Officer (CDO).  He quotes from Kevin Kelly's (1995) book, Out of Control : The New Biology of Machines, Social Systems and the Economic World, "It is generally much easier to kill an organization than change it substantially.”

3. Managing Information Technology in Turbulent Times

In December, 1998, I created a course in Information Technology (IT) Management for students enrolled in the Andrews University Master of Software Engineering degree.  This differs significantly from the Management Information Systems (MIS) course I teach to Master of Business Administration (MBA) students, which is a much more frequently taught course.  In fact, I was not able to locate any textbooks that addressed the material adequately, so after a search, I chose Louis Fried's book, Managing Information Technology in Turbulent Times for the course, and prepared my own course outline, assignments, and PowerPoint slides.

The opening paragraph under the Objectives and Content heading in the course outline makes it very clear from the outset that IT is a major player in effecting the changes that businesses need to make to remain competitive:  "Over the past 20 years, the information revolution has required major changes in the way businesses operate their information systems.  Gaining and sustaining competitive advantage has become directly related to the effective deployment of information technology to manage, design, create and provide goods or services.  During the 1990's we have begun to see radical changes in the management of information systems.   Previously, the changes were driven largely by advances in technology, but now business directions in themselves are potent driving forces."
