Competencies "Pep Talk"

Subject: Competencies! Competencies!

Dear Fellow Leaders,

Do any of you ever fear it may take a lifetime to master these 20 competencies we have mapped out for ourselves? I read a statement by Peter Lowe in the December issue of "Bits & Pieces" that adds a new dimension to becoming competent.

"COURAGE CAN BE LEARNED. When bomb disposal experts were interviewed on whether they were selected because of their extraordinary courage, the results were clear. Ordinary people, once they gain the technical knowledge, skills, and competence in understanding how to disarm bombs, have little to fear of them. They are courageous in situations which would cause others great fear. Their fear is dissipated as a result of becoming competent."

Thanks, David, for the great quote! I love it especially since I'm
finishing up my portfolio and am getting ready to prove I'm competent.

Cheers,
Marilyn

David,

I love the analogy. 20 bombs to be disarmed. Could you say, then, that
perfect competence casteth out fear? I wonder whether thare may not
be a bit of objectivity present in disarming a bomb that is not present
when achieving competence as, say, an effective communicator. And that
leads me to the possibility that some (e.g., the concrete sequentials)
may try to objectify every challenge, while others (e.g., the abstract
randoms--like me) may try to rationalize the challenge to suite their
style. Either position at the extreme would be dangerous--the former
would might disarm a bomb but be unable to negotiate a peace settlement;
the latter could negotiate the settlement but would have been blown up
before he got there. Hmmm.

I really enjoy such mind-stretching ideas; keep em coming.

I really needed to read your comment on the debombers. My IDP is so
comprehehensive. what did I do to myself? These questions are rhetorical..

David, Thanks for the bomb quote. I've tried many different ways to say
the same thing, but your quote does it the best yet!
