Final Exam:

Due Date:

Friday, July 9, 1999

Question 1. Develop a metaphor for qualitative research.

Qualitative research is like:

an analog representation of sight or sound, rather than its digital equivalent.

For instance, a real rainbow (not this fake digital creation), has a continuous gradation of color.  This can be captured in detail using a quality analog camera and film.  But when this rich image is digitized, either with a digital camera or a scanner, the quantization causes detail to be lost.

The colors of the rainbow are:
violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red.

Numeric values can be given for the wavelengths of each of these colors, and there are circumstances when this is exactly what must be known.

But the visual effect a rainbow produces, the emotions and associations it that go with it, can be known about only through the qualitative research method.  Qualitative research opens our minds to new ways of thinking.

Question 2. Address the question of credibility, integrity, trustworthiness, reliability, verisimilitude.

Validity, reliability and ethics: (Merriam p218,219)

1. Internal Validity - congruence with reality

2. Reliability - consistency with findings

3. External Validity - generalizability

4. Ethics
